Potato Please looks like an endless chore and is actually a finite one. The pile runs out. The quota is the pile: the HUD in community screenshots reads 60,000 potatoes, shown as a percentage and a raw count. The developer has not published the figure, but the counter is in the game. Everything else — ranks, recounts, the storm, the ending — is a way of marking how far through that pile you are.
The four phases of a run
| Phase | What changes | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up | The game teaches the loop. Finishing it awards Warmed Up. | Learn the cut. Do not spend. |
| Manual quota | The real counter starts at 60,000 in the HUD. Ranks begin appearing at the start of a shift. | Knife, carry capacity, short walks. |
| Automation | Machines, hoppers and the water channel take over the repetitive work. | Find the one bottleneck and buy its fix. |
| Storm and ending | Weather changes, the flamethrower arrives, the ending branches open. | Decide what kind of worker you are. |
Phase names are ours; the events are drawn from the store description and the 1.0.1/1.0.2 patch notes.
The counter is the only honest feedback
The HUD quota counter moves only when a potato is accepted. That makes it the most reliable signal in the game: better than the pile height, better than the loudspeaker, better than your own sense of progress.
- If the counter moves and the pile looks the same, the pile is bigger than it looks.
- If the counter does not move, the potato failed the peel check or missed the water.
- If the counter moves in bursts, a machine is buffering. That is normal; check the outlet, not the input.
Ranks and Master Peeler
Ranks appear at the start of a shift. Patch 1.0.2 fixed the wrong rank showing there, and fixed Master Peeler completing without its reward once the quota was done. Both details tell you the same thing: the rank track is tied to quota completion, not to a separate grind.
Master Peeler is the end-of-quota milestone. If your save was stuck on that page before 1.0.2, loading the save after the update should recover it. If it does not, report it — the developer explicitly asked for reports through the Troubleshooting page.
The storm
The storm is a scripted weather event, not a random hazard. 1.0.2 fixed “the storm's chill and the free flamethrower” appearing early after starting a new game or loading a pre-storm save. The flamethrower is given as part of that sequence.
When the quota ends
Hitting 100% does not roll credits. The objective changes to “Find the potato with the key”, and then to the iron door. The key is inside a potato; the door opens onto the train with the three levers. That sequence is the actual ending, and it is why the pile is only the first half of the story.
There are three final levers, five ending achievements (one is a missable variant), and the Every Path Has a Price achievement for seeing every path notes that “there is no perfect ending”. That is a design statement, not a bug: the game does not offer a clean win.
The endings themselves are documented on the endings page, behind a spoiler gate. If you only want to know how much is left, the short answer is: one final decision, then the credits.
