The puppy is the only creature in Potato Please who is not being measured against a quota. It is also a real gameplay system: it peels, it carries, it gets lost, and one achievement is attached to feeding it.

What is confirmed

BehaviourEvidence
The puppy peels potatoesPatch 1.0.1: potatoes peeled by the puppy do not count as machine output for quests
The puppy can carry itemsPatch 1.0.2: the key potato can no longer be carried off by the vacuum or the puppy
The puppy can get lostPatch 1.0.1: muting the puppy still lets you hear its lost whine
The puppy can be mutedPatch 1.0.1 added the option; 1.0.2 made it silence the lost whine too
Feeding it unlocks Good BoyCommunity guide and Steam discussion: “Feed the dog near the warehouse”

The first four are official patch notes; the last is community-documented.

Using the dog without wasting it

  • Let it peel. Free labour is free labour, and those potatoes count toward A Thousand Peels and Ten Thousand.
  • Do not count it as a machine. If a quest asks for machine output, the dog does not qualify (1.0.1).
  • Keep it away from quest items. Before 1.0.2 it could carry off the key potato. On 1.0.2 the key potato waits for you, but the habit is still good.
  • Check the whine. The dog gets stuck in geometry. The whine is the tell.

Good Boy and A Heart of Gold are different

AchievementSteam description%How
Good BoyA little kindness goes a long way.76.1%Feed the dog near the warehouse
A Heart of GoldEven the smallest act of kindness matters.61.1%Send potatoes to the people of Varenka when they write asking for help

Both routes are community-documented in the jxselee Steam guide. The developer has not published triggers.

It is easy to conflate the two because both read as “be kind”. Mechanically they are separate: one is the dog at the warehouse, the other is a letter from a village. If A Heart of Gold has not popped, check whether Varenka’s request is still sitting unanswered in your letter pile.

The dog is also a useful barometer for the game’s tone: genuinely warm in a yard built on cold administration. For the other half of that warmth, read the letters page.
