The ending is not a cutscene you watch; it is a set of levers you pull. Once the quota is finished, the objective changes: find the key potato, open the iron door, and take the train. Then you choose which line the potatoes — and your son — will serve. Three levers, three endings, one of which has a rarer variant that depends on letters you answered hours earlier.
How the ending is structured
Finish the quota
Peel the pile down to the last potato. The HUD in community screenshots reads 60,000; the developer has never published the number. The Quota achievement unlocks here.
Find the key potato
At 100% the objective becomes “Find the potato with the key”. The key is inside a potato in the pile. Pick it up by hand; 1.0.2 stopped the vacuum and the puppy from carrying it off.
Open the iron door
The key opens a vault-style iron door. Behind it is the train cab with the three levers. This is story progress, not a puzzle.
Go to the train cab
The cab has three levers, one for each line. Before you pull anything, make a manual save. The game supports manual saves and this is the single most useful save in the run.
Pull one lever
Each lever ends the game with a different ending. Reload the manual save and pull the next one to see them all without replaying the shift.
The three levers
| Lever | Ending | Achievement text | Global % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Front | For the Motherland | “Your loyalty has been noted.” | 26.3% |
| Western Industry | Traitor | “Your service has been terminated.” | 30.7% |
| Varenka | The Last Harvest | “Every harvest must end.” | 23.4% |
Lever names are community-documented (jxselee guide, 5 Nov 2026). Achievement names, texts and percentages are first-party Steam data.
Pull all three, reloading the save between them, and you also unlock Every Path Has a Price — “There is no perfect ending” (13.8%). The achievement is the game’s thesis: none of the three is a clean win.
Pavel’s loyalty: the fourth ending
There is a fourth ending achievement, Your Own Executioner (9.8%), and it is the only missable one. It is not a fourth lever. It is what happens when you leave on a non-Motherland line while your son Pavel is still loyal to the state. Varenka is the most-reported route; some players report that any non-Motherland departure works.
Pavel’s loyalty is tracked across the whole game by your replies to his letters. The community guide describes it as a running score: each reply counts toward the Ministry (−1) or the Resistance (+1). If the total is above zero by the end, Pavel joins the Resistance and the achievement is gone. You cannot fix it at the levers.
The reliable route, according to the community guide
- Whenever Pavel asks for money, choose Send.
- In the “Director’s Questions” letter, choose Tell what you know.
- Answer the other letters however you like; the total should still stay below zero.
- Hide the Resistance notes you find in potatoes. You may report at most one to the Ministry. Two or more and Pavel is taken hostage — the achievement is gone.
- Do not put the Resistance poison on the carrots for the memorial dinner; that counts as another reported note. Pouring it out or putting it on the cucumbers is safe.
- Do not report the people of Varenka.
- At the end, pull the Varenka lever.
How to check before you commit
- Pavel’s last letter should mention that he is going to a school near the capital.
- The last Resistance note should not contain a line like “Your son is with us”.
- If either check fails, the achievement is no longer obtainable in this playthrough.
Two hidden beats that are not endings
| Achievement | How it is documented | Global % |
|---|---|---|
| No Escape | Walk away from the warehouse in any direction. The loudspeaker warns you; keep going. Cross the outer perimeter and a cutscene starts. | 12.1% |
| Unauthorized Passenger | Buy the Sack Cableway, load a sack, wait for the hook to grab it, stand under it while it is low, look at its underside and hold E. Ride at least 3 metres. | 3.0% |
Both routes are from the jxselee Steam guide; Unauthorized Passenger also has a dedicated Russian guide by Meta Aezven.
No Escape is not an alternate ending; it is a scripted response to leaving the post. Unauthorized Passenger is a physics stunt and the rarest achievement in the game at 3.0%. Neither changes the levers.
The ending checklist
- Pavel’s letters: money sent, “Director’s Questions” answered with “Tell what you know”, no more than one Resistance note reported.
- Resistance poison not used on the carrots.
- Varenka’s requests for potatoes answered at least once (this is A Heart of Gold, not a lever).
- Manual save made in the train cab.
- Pull Northern Front → reload → Western Industry → reload → Varenka.
- For Your Own Executioner, ensure Pavel is loyal before pulling Varenka.
